Ben Shneiderman: "Beyond Smart Graphics: Building tools to empower users"
While the label "Smart Graphics" may appeal to some designers, the evidence
of
historical development and empirical studies is that users prefer tool-like
systems that reinforce feelings of empowerment. Terms, such as 'smart',
'intelligent' or 'expert' mislead developers and offend users. Effective
designs are marked by comprehensible interfaces that are consistent,
predictable
and controllable, and NOT adaptive, autonomous, and anthropomorphic. This
talk
will give examples and suggest design principles for future systems that
generate higher user performance, great satisfaction, and increased
responsibility.
